Details Of The Course

Delivered through highly practical, interactive sessions, the programme moves beyond theory to help staff understand how the developing adolescent brain influences behaviour, learning, relationships and emotional regulation. Participants develop an in-depth understanding of executive functioning
skills, including attention, working memory, planning, organisation, flexible thinking, impulse control, problem-solving and self-regulation. These abilities continue to develop throughout adolescence and directly influence young people’s learning, communication, relationships, identity and wellbeing.

The programme also explores how brain development and executive functioning interact with:

9

Trauma and adverse childhood experiences

9

Neurodiversity and additional learning needs

9

Poverty, inequality and social disadvantage

9

Culture, identity and lived experience

9

Relationships, belonging and peer influence

9

The environments in which young people live and learn

Participants are supported to move away from deficit-based explanations of behaviour and instead consider what may be happening beneath the behaviour, within the young person and around them. The training strengthens reflective practice, professional curiosity, relational communication and collaborative problem-solving, enabling staff to respond more thoughtfully and adapt their support to the individual young person.

Most importantly, the programme is designed to create practice that staff can remember, apply and sustain long after the training has finished.
